Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about starting your martial arts training at MODUS Training Centre.

How much do classes cost?

We are currently structuring our class formats and future coaching modules. If you are interested in a specific program, please contact us directly to discuss pricing, early access, and what format best fits your goals.

What is the focus of the beginner curriculum?

Our beginner curriculum is centered on foundational grappling mechanics drawn from Jiu Jitsu and Judo. We prioritize skeletal alignment, body leverage, positional control, and breakfall safety, ensuring you learn to move efficiently and safely without relying on raw strength.

Who is this program designed for?

MODUS is built for Queer individuals, allies, and anyone seeking a welcoming space to learn martial arts. Whether you are stepping onto the mat for the first time or returning to practice, our program is designed to help you master technical mechanics, build confidence, and grow within an environment where you can be completely yourself.

How can I prepare for my first session?

Preparation begins with an open mindset and strict personal hygiene. Because grappling is a close contact sport, clean hygiene is a non-negotiable priority and a fundamental mark of mutual respect for your training partners. Before stepping onto the mat, please ensure you shower ahead of practice, apply deodorant, wear freshly washed workout clothes, and keep your fingernails and toenails trimmed short. Arriving clean and prepared ensures a safe, comfortable, and respectful environment for everyone.

How often are classes held?

We offer scheduled 90-minute technical group sessions throughout the month. Official class dates and schedule updates are announced directly to our members list.

What should I wear to class?

Wear comfortable athletic clothing, such as a fitted t-shirt, rashguard, or workout shorts free of zippers, snaps, or hard plastic elements. We train barefoot on clean mats, and specialized gear is not required for beginner sessions.

Practitioners in standard casual training attire
I have never trained before. Can I join?

Yes. All beginner modules are designed specifically for individuals with zero prior experience.

Can I join if I am not a beginner?

Absolutely. While our primary mission centers on introducing martial arts to individuals who might not otherwise try it, practitioners of every experience level, rank, and background are fully welcome.

Do I need to be athletic?

Not at all. You will build functional mobility and conditioning naturally through progressive technical practice.

What is Randori?

Randori translates to "free practice." It refers to controlled, fluid sparring where partners apply techniques dynamically.

What is an Open Mat?

An Open Mat is an informal, non-curriculum training block. It offers dedicated mat space where practitioners of all experience levels can drop in to drill specific scenarios, practice flow sparring, ask questions, and share technical knowledge at their own pace.

Still Have Questions?

We are happy to clarify anything before you step onto the mats for the first time.
